Chapter History

Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. became the sixth alumnae chapter of the Sorority when it was chartered on April 28, 1922 in Wilmington, Delaware. The charter members were initiated into the sorority under the sponsorship of Epsilon Omega Chapter, Baltimore, Maryland. The charter members were:

  • Anna E. Broadax
  • Ella Smith Elbert
  • Sadie L. Jones
  • Nellie Blythe Nicholson Taylor
  • Marianne Reed

After a number of years of very effective community service, the original chapter ceased to function. Years later another group of members expressed an interest in forming a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in Wilmington, Delaware.

As a tribute to the former chapter, they requested the use of the original name, Zeta Omega. To fulfill the request, at least one member of the original chapter was required to be a part of the group filing the application.

Fortunately, they were able to locate Anna Brodnax who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was invited to join them and consented. Thus, Zeta Omega Chapter, Wilmington, Delaware was reactivated on May 5, 1947,
The original members of the reactivated chapter and their offices are as follows:

  • Anna E. Broadnax, Vice President
  • Lillian Gardiner Burt, Treasurer

  • Roma Quinn, Jackson, Dean of Pledges
  • Irma Geddis, Parliamentarian

The reactivated Zeta Omega Chapter was formally presented to the Wilmington community at an open meeting of the President’s Conference held at the Walnut Street YMCA on November 16, 1947. The Chapter continued to take an active part in the community life of Wilmington, Delaware by sponsoring two annual affairs; Fashionetta’s Dream (1948), featuring the latest in wearing apparel and a Debutante ball, a premier social event for high school seniors (1950).
